Frequently Asked Questions

Seven elected officials serve as the Board of Commissioners in Onslow County.  The Board is responsible for local government in the county, outside of the incorporated city limits of the towns.  Commissioners make local laws and ordinances to protect the citizens -- this includes overseeing and setting policies for twenty-six county departments and about 1,500 county employees.  County departments include everything from Emergency Medical Services, Fire Service, Social Services, Health Department, Human Resources, Finance, Planning and Permitting, Parks, Libraries, Museums, Animal Control and others.

Commissioners are responsible for funding the elected sheriff’s office and his deputies.  They also provide funding for construction and maintenance of the county jail, the courthouse, and over forty school facilities.  The county owns and operates the airport, landfill, vehicle maintenance facility and other government buildings to provide needed services to our citizens. Each year, Commissioners are required to produce a balanced county budget that funds all mandated services. Eighty percent of the county budget is required to fund mandated services and facilities.  Commissioners also serve on other boards that affect the livelihood of our citizens such as the NC Dept. of Transportation Advisory Board, Onslow Water and Sewer Authority Board, Trillium Health Board, Onslow Memorial Hospital Board, Health Board, Juvenile Crime Prevention Board and many others.

At the center of Royce Bennett's many objectives for his next term as County Commissioner is the desire to meet the needs of the community - to help the people of Onslow themselves. He will do this by:

  • Continuing to build EMS stations around Onslow
  • Securing permanent funding for the volunteer fire departments
  • Encouraging economic prosperity through the Camp Davis Industrial Park (projected to bring up to 2,500 jobs to Onslow County)
  • Perpetuating the joint plan with the schools and community college to fund future growth
  • Increasing capacity for emergency services (including the county jail)
  • More recreational opportunities!

             And more . . .

Primary elections give the voter a direct say in who is nominated to run in the general election - and from there it is decided who holds the office. Essentially, to abstain from the primary is to abstain from having more say in the final results.

The primary election for Onslow County will be taking place on March 3, 2026, with voting polls open from 6:30 AM to 7:30 PM. However, there are also several opportunities for early voting on these select dates and times:

  • February 12-13 - 8:00 AM - 7:30 PM
  • February 16-20 - 8:00 AM - 7:30 PM
  • February 23-27 - 8:00 AM - 7:30 PM
  • February 28 - 8:00 AM - 3:00 PM
